Researchers at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń regularly appear on the list of the world’s most influential scientists in terms of the number of citations their articles receive. The list of the most frequently cited scientists is compiled by Elsevier and Stanford University.

Bookshelves

In a ranking published in 2025, forty-two scholars from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń were among the most frequently cited scientists in the world. The updated lists were prepared on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of the scientific achievements of researchers from around the world, after calculating a complex bibliometric index (the so-called C-score), which takes into account factors such as the number of independent citations, the Hirsch index, and the author's place and role among co-authors.

The authors of the ranking prepare two publicly available lists: one compiles data from the researchers’ entire professional careers (through the end of 2024), and the other—exclusively from the most recent calendar year (2024). The list includes the top 100,000 researchers based on the C-score (with or without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or higher in their subfield.

CiteScore is a bibliometric indicator that measures the citation impact of journals and other serial publications. The ranking shows the average number of citations received in a given year by articles published in the journal over the past four years. A single journal may be listed in several disciplines and is evaluated separately in each one. This means that the indicator should be used only to compare journals within a single discipline, as it is not normalized and does not account for differences between disciplines, such as the average number of publications cited per article or publication frequency.

Thanks to CiteScore, each journal included in the ranking is positioned within a given field (or fields). Its position is expressed as a percentile. On this basis, it is possible to determine which journal is the most influential in its discipline and assign it to the appropriate quartile. The top quartile (Q1) includes the top quarter of journals with the highest percentile in a given category.

The purpose of this list is to help researchers determine where best to present their research and to identify journals where it is worth keeping track of the latest publications. CiteScore is powered by Scopus (Elsevier) and includes titles from over 7,000 publishers cataloged across 333 subject areas.
