The mission of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is to create, develop, and disseminate knowledge by conducting scientific research at the highest level, educating students and PhD students, and preparing future generations of scientists and specialists. The university combines the tradition of a European university with a modern approach to science, education, and international cooperation. At the heart of its activities lie academic freedom, the pursuit of truth, social responsibility, and respect for universal ethical values.

The document defining the mission of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń was adopted by the NCU Senate at its meeting on November 28, 2000.

The mission of Nicolaus Copernicus University is to develop and disseminate knowledge, in particular through the following activities, which are considered equally important:

  • conducting scientific research and making its results available;
  • teaching at the academic level and conducting other forms of educational and outreach activities that meet the current and future needs and aspirations of society;
  • training academic staff and, in connection with this, awarding professional titles and academic degrees.

Nicolaus Copernicus University regards its educational and culture-shaping mission as its educational duty. This duty is fulfilled through university education, which encompasses the University’s students. Since 2013, the university's motto has been "Seek truth in all things" (Latin: *Quaerere veritatem in omnibus*), a reference to an excerpt from Nicolaus Copernicus's letter to Pope Paul III that captures the university's patron philosophy of life and scientific approach.

NCU Strategy

Work on the new strategy is being led by Prof. Danuta Dziawgo, from the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management, who serves as the deputy rector for the development and implementation of the university’s strategy.

The Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń Strategy for 2021-2026 was adopted as a document outlining the university’s development priorities across five key areas: research, education, the university’s environment, people, and management. Its overarching goal is to strengthen NCU position as a European research university with strong international recognition and significant social impact. The strategy aims to develop scientific research that addresses global civilizational challenges, strengthen interdisciplinarity, and increase the university’s presence in the international academic community. Particular emphasis has been placed on supporting talented faculty, developing scientific partnerships, and ensuring the effective transfer of knowledge to the economy and the broader community.
