Research Areas and Disciplines

photo of a molecular model

Scientific disciplines are structured areas of research and education within which scientific and artistic activity is conducted. They are grouped into broader fields of science and art, which organize the entire research landscape—from humanities and social sciences, through exact and natural sciences, to medicine, arts, and engineering and technical sciences. Such a division helps compare scientific output, plan the development of the university, and clearly communicate what and how individual research teams work on.

Evaluation Principles

For each discipline, categories obtained in the 2022 evaluation of the quality of scientific activity are presented. This was a nationwide assessment conducted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, in which, among others, publication output, research projects, and the impact of research on the social and economic environment were analyzed. The categories (from A+ to C) have real significance: they affect the position of the university, its funding, and the ability to conduct and develop research. For prospective students and external partners, they are a clear indicator of the quality and strength of individual research areas.

The list includes disciplines subject to formal evaluation, i.e. those in which NCU meets national criteria regarding staff size and intensity of scientific activity. It should also be emphasized that the university conducts research in other, smaller or more specialized disciplines that are not included in this list. These include, among others, technical computer science and telecommunications, international relations, and medical biology.

Therefore, the presence of a discipline on the list does not mean that research at NCU is conducted only in these areas. The list shows those disciplines that in a given period were included in the national evaluation and were assigned a quality category. Together with other research areas, they form a full, dynamic picture of Nicolaus Copernicus University as an institution conducting research at many levels and in many directions Disciplines are structured areas of research and education within which scientific and artistic activity is conducted.
