On February 19th, the day of the birthday of its patron, the Nicolaus Copernicus University celebrated the University Day. On that day, state and university awards were presented, as well as the titles of the NCU Honorary Professor and Ambassador. The celebrations were accompanied by promotions of new habilitated doctors and doctors.
The celebrations were preceded by a University Concert, which took place on February 18th at 6:00 p.m. in the Aula of the Nicolaus Copernicus University.
On Wednesday, February 19, the celebration of the University Day began at 10:15 a.m. with the laying of flowers at the Monument of Nicolaus Copernicus in the Old Town Square on the 547th anniversary of the birth of the University's patron. From 11:00 a.m., the celebrations continued in the University Aula. The programme included: the speech by the Rector, Prof. Andrzej Tretyn, the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Dr Anna Budzanowska, occasional speeches by guests and the presentation of distinctions, medals and awards - both state and university ones. During this year's celebrations a lecture was given by Prof. Tomaso Poggio, the laureate of the scientific award "Ratio et Spes".
An important point of the ceremony was awarding Convallaria Copernicana, a special distinction of the Nicolaus Copernicus Copernicus University - this year it was awarded to the outstanding physicist Professor Józef Szudy.
During this year's University Day, the group of Honorary Professors of the Nicolaus Copernicus University also expanded. It was joined by: Prof. dr habil. Grzegorz Goździewicz from the Faculty of Law and Administration, Prof. dr habil. Wiesław Kozak from the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences and Prof. dr habil. Andrzej Nowicki from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The titles of Honorary Professor are awarded to professors with outstanding scientific achievements who retired in the previous academic year.
During the ceremony new Ambassadors of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń were also presented. The title is awarded to graduates with significant successes in science, culture, art, politics or business, promoting the University in their daily activities.
Traditionally, the University Day saw the presentation of diplomas to the new habilitated doctors and doctors.
