An Outstanding Guest Visits Psychologists

Professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa from Japan is giving a lecture at the Department of Psychology on Tuesday, May 29th. The honourable guest is the world-renowned primatologist, one of the most prominent contemporary psychologists. He has been researching the behavior of chimps for over 40 years. The lecture in Toruń will be the only opportunity -to listen to a researcher from Kyoto University in Poland.

Professor Matsuzawa conducts research and observation of chimpanzee behavior both in the laboratory and in the wild. His main project - "Ai-project" - run at the Primate Research Institute - PRI (Kyoto University) began in 1978. Chimpanzee named Ai learned to use Arabic numerals, presenting the understanding of the cardinal and orderly aspect of the number (Matsuzawa, 1985, NATURE ). Currently, the second generation of chimps live in the PRI, and Ayumu, son of Ai, often performs many tasks with greater efficiency than his mother.
