2017-05-19

The Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń moved up in the CWTS Leiden Ranking, which examines scientific strength of the university on the basis of scientific publications and their impact upon research development around the world. This year the NCU took the 703rd place in the world (moving up by 39 places as compared to last year’s edition).

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies at the University of Leiden (the Netherlands), the Ranking developer, is one of the most influential research centres whose focus is on scientific policy and research in the field of bibliometrics. The specificity of the CWTS Leiden Ranking lies in its orientation solely on the measurement of research activity of the university based on bibliometric indicators of publications indexed in the database Web of Science, and on cooperation in research projects. The 2017 edition accounts for the data collected in the years 2012-2015, and comprises 902 universities from all over the world.

The NCU is 8th among 19 Polish higher education schools (last year only 14 Polish higher education schools appeared in the ranking).

The ranking gives the possibility of ordering universities in terms of the number of publications and their number in particular ranges: Top1%, Top10%, Top50%. The results according to selected criteria are available both for all sciences and for particular disciplines – The NCU scientists representing mathematics and computer science may boast about the highest proportion of the most significant publications among Polish schools.

In terms of the total number of own publications, which are among the 10% most influential ones around the world, the NCU took the 6th place in Poland, with an index of 6.2%.

Cooperation is another key indicator, according to which universities are classified in the CWTS Leiden Ranking. In this case, the ranking takes into account the total number of publications produced in cooperation with other centres and in international cooperation, as well as their number depending on the distance between units (below 100 km and over 5000 km).

The NCU took the 8th place in Poland, having one of the highest percentage of publications in Poland (fifth, after the University of Warsaw, AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków and the Jagiellonian University, and Warsaw University of Technology) created together with the most remote centres (21.2%).

The 2017 CWTS Leiden Ranking was published on 17th May.
