The Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics Ranking of World's Universities) is based on the indicators showing the presence of academic and research institutions in the internet. The assessment accounts for four criteria: the presence, impact, openness and excellence, which means that it considers both the amount of web content (the number of web pages and files placed in the internet), and the visibility and impact of these publications measured by the number of external links. The ranking is published by Cybermatrics Lab, a research group from the Spanish National Research Council based in Madrid.
The first edition of the ranking was published in 2004. The ranking is updated in January and July each year. The objective of the Webometrics Ranking of World's Universities is to enhance the presence of academic institutions in the Internet, and promote open access to publications of scientific results. As compared to the previous edition of the ranking (from July 2015), the Nicolaus Copernicus university recorded a rise by one place.
Harvard University opens the latest Ranking Web of Universities, and the Jagiellonian University is the highest ranked Polish university, which came in the 281st place.
