The history of human and cat relationships began 10,000 years ago. Its origins, however, still remain a mystery mainly due to scarcity of research material. Gaps in our knowledge in the subject are successfully filled by a group of researchers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. An article discussing the topic has recently been published in PNAS, a prestigious official journal of the National Academy of Sciences. The first author is Dr Magdalena Krajcarz who has made an attempt to find ancestors of domestic cats in Neolithic Central Europe.

Almost 300 wood samples from 18 posts, of total weight of 26 kg have been collected in Mustang by Barbara Gmińska-Nowak, M.A. from the Faculty of Fine Arts, UMK. Due to them, she compiled the first for the region standard chronology of Himalayan pine and established what type of wood the first buildings in that region were constructed from.

The 25th anniversary of inauguration of the 32-metre radio telescope of Nicolaus Copernicus University Centre for Astronomy in Piwnice near Toruń will be celebrated in October 2019. During that quarter-century, this remarkable instrument - the largest of this kind in Poland - made a number of discoveries. On 19th February 2015 the Nicolaus Copernicus University celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding. The celebrations had a unique character.

Adaptation workshops for foreign students studying at the NCU on a full-time basis were organised by the Admissions and Students Affairs Office (in cooperation with Foundation 'Ocalenie') on 29-30 January 2015.

Jubilee with dancing

University students, employees, alumni, are all invited to attend 7 dancing nights to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Nicolaus Copernicus University organised by the Radio Sfera and the Od Nowa Club. The first dancing night in the style of the 1940's has already taken place. The next dance in the style of the 1950s will take place on Friday, 20th February.

Strength in interdisciplinarity

A team of the NCU researchers will receive 250 thousand euro for the creation of a unique research infrastructure (as well as an e-infrastructure) for the restoration/conservation, interpretation and management of cultural heritage.

Seeing the invisible radiation

Can we see infrared light? Up to date people have believed that the human eye is able to detect only a small portion of the electromagnetic wave spectrum, which is commonly known as a visible light. Polish scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University led by prof. Wojtkowski observed that other wavelengths, like infrared, could also be perceived by our eyes.

10 years with Medics

It has been 10 years since the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń merged with the Medical University in Bydgoszcz, and the Ludwig Rydygier Collegium Medicum was established. To celebrate this anniversary a special meeting of the NCU Senate will take place in Bydgoszcz.

"Olympic" competition

The rowers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University did a great job in the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta (18th-19th October) just under the walls of Harvard University. They are the first Polish crew to have competed in that prestigious race.

From Toruń to Harvard

It was the first time the Polish crew was competing in the prestigious Head Of The Charles River Regatta (HOCR) just under the walls of Harvard University on 18th-19th October 2014. Poland was represented by the rowers from the Nicolaus Copernicus University.
