Astrophysics and Astrochemistry

Dr hab. Piotr Żuchowski, prof. UMK

The main thematic areas of the Center are astrophysics, quantum chemistry and theoretical spectroscopy, the tangent point of which is an attempt to understand how planets, stars and galaxies arise and evolve from interstellar matter. The Center includes two groups that describe the life cycle of matter in the Universe in a complementary way.

The Center's research activity focuses on improving the technology of ultra-sensitive optical spectroscopy, medical bioimaging methods and advanced fluorescence microscopy to understand the basics of interactions in the world of individual emitters and nanostructures, their interaction coupled systems, as well as oxides and organs such as the eye. The group of researchers belonging to the Center includes both experts in experimental research with high-class scientific equipment as well as theoreticians specializing in ab initio modeling and computation. The structure of the Center is based on three Priority Research Teams selected in the competition.

In the thematic scope of the University Center of Excellence "Dynamics, Mathematical Analysis & Artificial Intelligence", issues related to dynamic systems and ergodic theory are mixed. In addition, the Center's work will focus on analytic number theory, computer science, open quantum systems and quantum information. As part of research on artificial intelligence, researchers will focus on brain signal analysis, neurodynamics, and machine learning. There are four areas of research related to the Center.

The Center "Towards personalized medicine" consists of scientists from the faculties of pharmacy, medicine and chemistry. The dynamic development of personalized medicine is a catalyst for the expansion of three main trends that research teams will deal with. Primarily, researchers are focusing on finding new disease biomarkers, developing new therapeutic strategies and regenerative medicine. For this purpose, five research groups have been created.

The aim of the University Center of Excellence "Interacting Minds, Societies, Environments (IMSErt) is to cross the boundaries of traditionally, ideographically (descriptively) understood humanities and social sciences towards pioneering research, big data analyzes, quantitative and experimental focused research on nomothetic (i.e. aimed at formulating regularities and laws) explaining cultural processes. The Center's activity focuses on creating truly interdisciplinary projects. Thinking about the humanities and social sciences in cooperation with science and natural sciences, using modern technologies (including digital and experimental humanities tools), will allow for the implementation of innovative research projects The disciplines carrying out research at the Center include linguistics, archeology, psychology, social geography, environmental studies, economics, finance and management, and others.
