J. Monnet Centre for European Studies

Jean Monnet Centre for European Studies conducts research focused on the legal, political and social problems
of European integration. The studies of the Centre concentrate on the adjustment of Polish law to European standards.
One of two annual international seminars organised in Toruń by the Centre is devoted to these problems in general.
The other one concerns the adjustment of Polish environmental protection law to the European Union standards.
The Centre also co-operates with academics from various countries preparing the program of the European studies
for Polish universities.
Within its teaching activities, the Centre offers to students of all disciplines European Special Studies.
These studies constitute the core of the Centre's educational activities and are the first step leading to the
ultimate establishment of departmental studies. These are the first studies of the type organised in Poland that
were established by the Rector's decision No. 5 of 15 February 1996 and have been organised since March 1996.
Till now eight different groups have been admitted. The course lasts four semesters and the admission of the
students takes place twice a year, at the beginning of each semester. The participants are present students or
graduates from all the departments of the university. Currently, 600 students are enrolled for four semesters.
The Centre also organises the Intensive Course on European Law, an annual undertaking of international character
which involves the participation of students from Eastern and Central European countries and lecturers from EU countries.
The Centre for European Studies offers also public lectures to students of various faculties of the University and all
researchers interested in the topic.
The Centre co-operates with other Polish centres for European Studies and with similar institutions in England,
France, Finland and Spain. It employs several foreign and Polish lecturers teaching both long term and shorter courses.
The Commission has awarded The Centre for European Studies with a title "Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence".
Intensive Courses on European Law are organised using sources from this grant.
