Survival Guide for Visitors - Shopping

SHOPPING

Shopping in Poland has undergone radical changes in the past few years and now, with the advent of large supermarkets and malls, it is possible to get virtually anything which could be bought in similar shops in Western Europe. Polish shops are usually open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturdays shops are mostly open till 2 or 3 p.m. and on Sundays they are closed (though food can be bought in some groceries and in the growing number of 24-hour shops). Stores do not close for lunch. Opening hours may be changed during Christmas or holidays - check advertised hours nearer the time.

Most international products are present in Polish shops hence there is no need to bring cosmetics or food articles unless you are on a special diet or have special requirements. The easiest way to do the shopping at the very beginning is to go to one of the self-service supermarkets which are usually open from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on Sundays. A good choice of articles is offered in a shopping centre COPERNICUS (ul. Żółkiewskiego 15) or KOMETA (ul. Grudziądzka 162) or CARREFOUR (ul. Olsztyńska 8). You can easily get there by a free shuttle bus (timetable at the bus stops or on the web-site www.morvi.pl). Watch out, as you will not be able to leave the bus until you get to the supermarket! A large selection of grocery is also available in MINI-MAL (ul. Łyskowskiego 8). If you are interested in more international food, you can go to PIOTR I PAWEL (ul. Szosa Bydgoska 26, Pasaz Zieleniec). Foreign newspapers and magazines can be bought in EMPiK (ul. Wielkie Garbary 18). If you live in a private appartment and want to decorate it, there are special shops in Toruń, such as Leroy Merlin, OBI.
